Larry received an M.A. in Mathematics, and in 1980 his Ph.D. in Zoology for research performed in Donald Bailey’s laboratory at the Jackson Laboratory. Both degrees were awarded by the University of Maine. He did postdoctoral work with William Dove at the McArdle Laboratory of the University of Wisconsin, where he subsequently became a lecturer.
In 1984 he joined the Trudeau Institute and has Full Member status. His main research interest is in innate and acquired resistance to opportunistic eukaryotic pathogens, with emphasis on the protozoan parasite, Toxoplasma gondii. He has been an author or co-author on approximately 70 research publications. Since 2011, Larry has served as the Chief Operating Officer of the Institute, and in 2013, was named Vice President.
